Lots of opening boxes this week!
My new serger arrived. After much research and debate, I ordered the Brother 1034D. Originally, I wanted a combination serger and coverstitch machine. But, the most reasonable one I found was $600. Since I haven’t sewn in nearly 2 years, my thinking is to start on an affordable machine and then move into a fancier machine later. You know, once I actually use it.
The Brother serger was a snap to set up. And to my delight, I realized threading this thing takes two minutes. I read the manual, oiled it with a fun little bottle labeled Zoom Spout, and off I went!
Off I went playing with some cotton scraps. I’m not too inspired by anything other than knits these days as that’s all my wardrobe is! The knit fabrics I ordered arrived a few days later.
The first thing I realized unboxing my fabric: I should always order swatches when I’m going to pay for shipping anyway.
The three colorways of Telio Rayon Bamboo ribbing are thinner and more slippery than I expected. I’m hoping it’ll be good material for cuffs though.
The jersey knit pink fabric with crabs is more or less what I expected. I did not realize the grey flowered fabric said viscose jersey knit fabric. It’s much stretchier than I expected.
The blue and black fabric would be cut into my favorite shirt pattern already if I didn’t need to wash it all first. It’s a double jacquard knit. I am really excited about the pattern and using the reverse side as cuffs.
Reflecting now, I think I wanted a heavier weight cotton ribbing. With stretch but not slipperiness. And thicker weight material for the prints.
