New thread arrived so I could play with the double needle set up on the sewing machine. It’s a bit tricky on knits. The bobbin thread has to be loose to allow for a little stretch, though I find that the hem gathers once the fabric is stretched. It’s not ideal so I’m looking forward to getting a coverstitch machine to make these hems even more polished.
The finished pink shirt! I curved the hem as I knew it would be too long. It has some room to grow into!
Before making the next version of the shirt, I drafted it two sizes smaller. I took the original pattern with the 3T and 2T markings.
Using the difference between the 3T and 2T marks, I drafted a size smaller than 2T.
On the new pattern, I also went ahead and curved the hemline.
Looking at the photo above, can you see the problem with my new pattern? I didn’t spot it until just now (days after sewing the next shirt and wondering about it).
The next version of this shirt is with a cotton blend from a brand called Doodles. Word of warning, I ordered a yard of fabric but after washing and drying the material, I only had 32″. I sure am glad I shrank it before sewing on it!
The shirt with the amended pattern turned out great!
I’m really proud of the double knit hems. The interior seams look good too.
So back to my question about the pattern problem. The shoulders on the original pattern are too wide. My newly drafted pattern doesn’t change the shoulder width at all! The length, neckline, and overall size fit a lot better, but the shoulders are still too wide. You know, because I didn’t change them. I’ll make some amendments and whip up a new shirt soon!
